‘Miracle on the Hudson’ Pilot Sully Inducted into National Aviation Hall of Fame
Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the captain behind one of aviation’s most famous events, the “Miracle on the Hudson,” has been inducted into the U.S. National Aviation Hall of Fame 17 years after the incident.
On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, operated by an Airbus A320, struck a flock of birds shortly after departing New York LaGuardia Airport, resulting in a loss of thrust in both engines. Captain Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles successfully ditched the aircraft in the Hudson River. All 150 passengers and five crew members on board survived.
The event became known worldwide as the “Miracle on the Hudson.” Sullenberger was inducted as a member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026 during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on September 24. He is also widely recognized for his contributions to aviation safety and pilot training throughout his career.
